In June 2025, Danny Boyle released 28 Years Later, the sequel to 28 Days Later. The original film, starring Peaky Blinders’ Cillian Murphy, grossed about 82.7 million dollars, while 28 Years Later made about 70.4 million, a massive drop in revenue. The new movie features major actors like Aaron Taylor-Johnson as well as some up-and-coming actors such as Alfie Williams. Sadly, many fans left the theater disappointed.
The movie takes place in Northeastern England, where boys as young as twelve are sent to the island across from their mainland to hunt and kill zombies. The performance from Alfie Williams, the 14-year-old who played the main character Spike, was extremely well done. He conveyed the emotions of the role well, and the final scene of Spike climbing the bone tower to place a skull on top was very well filmed and left the viewer with a chilling but optimistic feeling about Spike’s future.
Despite some of the film’s positive qualities, fans have hit review sites with buckets of negative reviews. One user said, “Put this in the top 10 list for worst movies ever made!” Another review said, “What a horrible movie.” Although the actors tried their best to make a good film, with the amount of plot holes and just odd and unnecessary scenes, there wasn’t much that good acting could do to salvage it. The original horror elements were almost completely gone. The quick shots of zombies rushing across the screen are now slower-paced, and the grainy camera quality has been replaced with a clean and crisp look. Sometimes you don’t need to make sequels to an already good movie, and 28 Years Later is a prime example of that.
