You might be wondering why there is a giant empty parcel of land next to Haddonfield High School. What was it before? And what will it become in the future? Bancroft previously provided programs and services for individuals with autism and developmental disabilities before they moved their location to Cherry Hill, leaving Bancroft in Haddonfield vacant. Back in 2005, it was determined that the Bancroft site needed to be redeveloped. After nearly two decades of proposed use changes, lawsuits, after decades of proposed changes and lawsuits, the town decided they needed to build more affordable housing units to satisfy the town’s requirement, and also wanted to add open space that could be used by the high school.
In 2025, the Borough of Haddonfield selected Woodmont Properties as the re-developer for the site. The current plan surrounding the unused land that the Bancroft corporation once took up features 98 rental units and 12 affordable housing units, which will consist of 3 buildings, along with 2 four-story residential buildings. Haddonfield High School’s parking lot will become part of the new residential complex, which will also include both structured and surface parking on the site. A portion of the site will be passive “open space” which have the potential to become additional fields for the high school sports teams. These changes are extremely important in a town like Haddonfield, especially because of its high population density. There is not enough land to build homes, and the town is in need of additional affordable housing. Therefore, the proposed project is considered to be beneficial to the town.
As of February 2026, the developer is in the design phase, and is in discussions with the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office. The project is anticipated to move forward to local boards in the spring of 2026.
