The HMHS field hockey team entered the Group 2 South Jersey state championship tournament as the number 7 seed with a regular season record of 11-6-1. On November 3, in the first round of the tournament, Haddonfield played against the number 10 seed Cinnaminson. In the game, neither team scored in the first three quarters. Both teams were fighting for their spot in the quarterfinals and were holding their own. However, one minute into the fourth quarter, Madison Yodis, a Cinnaminson player, scored a goal. Haddonfield was determined to score and countered 3 minutes later after Eme Hall drew a penalty corner and Reese Corbett scored, tying the game 1-1. Grace Porter, with just 8 minutes left in the fourth quarter, drew another penalty corner where Corbett had the assist to Charlotte McLister’s goal, giving Haddonfield the 2-1 win. Haddonfield advanced to the quarterfinals against Wall High School.
In the quarterfinal round, No.7 Haddonfield played as the heavy underdog against the No. 2 seed Wall, which had a record of 16-3-1 heading into the game. In the first possession of the game, the Dawgs brought the ball down the field, a penalty was called in Wall’s defensive circle, and a corner was awarded to Haddonfield. The Dawgs immediately converted on their first scoring chance when Alex Corbett scored with a drive from the top of the circle. It was a very evenly matched game throughout the remaining 58 minutes as the scored remained 1-0. Then, with less than 30 seconds left in regulation, a penalty shot (known as a ‘stroke’ in field hockey) was awarded to Wall. If the opposing team would score, the game likely would go into overtime. However, the Wall forward missed the penalty shot, and Haddonfield went on to win 1-0! The Dawgs field hockey season will continue on to the South Jersey Group 2 semifinals with a game against the No. 6 seed Allentown High School on Monday, November 10th.
