As most know, quite a few new additions were made to the HMHS faculty over the summer. This includes a new math teacher, Andrew Whitman, who is teaching Algebra 1, Multivariable Calculus, and Intro to Computer Science. This new arrangement brings new opinions, so Mr. Whitman was asked a few questions about his past, present, and future:
How are you liking HMHS?
I’m really enjoying my first month at HMHS. The students and faculty have been extremely welcoming and made the transition to a new school very smooth.
What made you come to HMHS?
I came to HMHS so that I could be part of a math department that holds itself to a very high standard and so that I could teach new classes such as multivariable calculus and intro to computer science.
How much prior working experience do you have?
This is my 13th year teaching. I taught at Triton High School for 5 years, then at Haddon Heights High School for 7 years.
What influenced you to become a teacher?
My AP Stats teacher, Larry Ottman, made learning math such a fun experience that I wanted to do the same for others. I also had an incredible cross-country and track coach who made me want to coach high school sports, so being a teacher allowed me to do both of those things.
What teaching style do you prefer?
I love to have students communicating with each other, so my teaching style involves a lot of working in groups and sharing ideas.
Are you having any difficulties with this classroom (room size, location, technology, etc)?
I really enjoy my classroom. It’s nice to look out at the courtyard. It’s an old room, so we are waiting to install a new outlet for the Promethean Board, but for now, we are getting by using the projector.
Any rules that HMHS has that you disagree with?
No, but a rule I really like is that all phones are put away at the beginning of each class.
It’s clear Mr. Whitman will have a great adjustment and fit into HMHS well. We look forward to having him a part of our staff.
