Philly Philly Sports Round Up

Sam Baskies, Contributing Writer

It is a good time to be any Philadelphia sports fan. The Eagles have the best record in the NFL, the Phillies are making some major splashes in the offseason, and the 76ers are turning their season around.

The Eagles are having a historic season. As of week 16 of the NFL season, the Eagles are 13-2. Their quarterback Jalen Hurts is top 10 in passing touchdowns, passing yards, has the most rushing touchdowns (for a quarterback), and has the third most rushing yards (for a quarterback). Jalen Hurts is the favorite in the NFC to win MVP. Overall he has the second best odds to win MVP only behind Patrick Mahomes. A.J. Brown their newest wide receiver has been on a tear. In the last 4 games, Brown has 519 receiving yards to go along with 4 receiving touchdowns. The rest of the Eagles’ offense has been unstoppable, according to ESPN the Eagles have the most points per game and the third most yards per game. The Eagles have the most players playing in the Pro Bowl with 8 players including, A.J. Brown, Landon Dickerson, Jalen Hurts, Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce, Haason Reddick, Miles Sanders, and Darius Slay. The last time the Eagles had 10 or more wins was in 2017 when they won the Super Bowl.

Now looking at the National League winner Philadelphia Phillies, just fresh off of losing the World Series and have made some huge splashes in free agency. First, the Phillies went out and signed the best shortstop in baseball, Trae Turner, for $300 million over the next 11 years.  Trea Turner is an all-around player: he can hit home runs, steal bases, and has a cannon of an arm. The Phillies can now move their young prospect Bryson Stott to second base.

The 76ers had a slow beginning to their season but have quickly turned it around. The 76ers have been battling injuries all season. First Joel Embiid’s foot, then James Harden’s foot, and now more recently Tyrese Maxey’s foot. Now that Embiid and Harden are healthy and the 76ers just came off an 8 game win streak. They are 8 and 2 in their last 10 games. Now Maxey should be coming back tonight against the Oklahoma City Thunder. As of 12/31/22 the 76ers right now are in 5th place and are 5 games back of the first place Boston Celtics. Hopefully, with the return of Tyrese Maxey, the 76ers should finish the season off within the top 3 spots in the Eastern Conference and should have a shot at the NBA finals. According to DraftKings Sportsbook, the 76ers have the 10th best odds to win the NBA finals.

All of the Philadelphia sports teams listed here should have a shot at their respective league titles. The Phillies should continue to make some smaller signings in free agency. The 76ers should make one or two more trades to boost their starting lineup, and the Eagles continue to show why they are the best team in the NFL.
