Top Ten Movies of 2016 (So far…)

Antony Post, Staff Writer

This summer was a pretty bad one when talking about movies. A lot of “ehhs” and “ughs”. Most of the film weren’t even a success commercially. Overall, the quality was lacking, however, there were some hidden gems from this year, so today I will be ranking my top ten movies of 2016, so far. Remember, any movie that was released in the USA during January through August is eligible to be on this list. Let’s get started!

Coming in at number 10 is Eddie the Eagle, a biopic starring Hugh Jackman and Taron Egerton about the true story of Eddie Edwards (Egerton) and his trainer (Jackman) as Edwards tries to get into the 1988 Olympics as a ski jumper, even though he has a leg injury. This was a heartfelt film with great acting and an amazing soundtrack. I give this film an A- and is now available to buy and rent.

Next up at number 9 is 10 Cloverfield Lane, a science fiction thriller starring John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The film follows Michelle (Winstead), who tries to escape Howard’s (Goodman) survival bunker after, according to Howard, the apocalypse. This film was well crafted and it kept me on the edge of my seat. I give this film an A- and is now available to buy and rent.

Swimming into number 8 is the sequel to my favorite movie of all time, Finding Dory. The Pixar sequel follows Dory, voiced by Ellen DeGeneres, who tries to find her parents after she starts remembering them for the first time. I loved the voice work and the heart touching story of this film. I give this movie an A- and will be available to rent and buy on November 15.

After that, at number 7 is an independent thriller called Green Room. Starring the late Anton Yelchin and Patrick Stewart, this film follows a neo nazi group trying to cover up a death at a rock concert, which means killing anyone who knows about it. This film was well crafted with amazing acting and a great screenplay. I give this film on A- and is available to rent and buy.kubo-main_0

At number 6 is the second animated film on this list, Kubo and the Two Strings. This stop motion film follows Kubo, who goes on a journey with a cockroach man and a monkey to stop the Moon King from killing him. Featuring the voice talents of Charlize Theron, Ralph Fiennes, and Matthew McConaughey. I give this film an A- and is currently still in theaters.

In the number 5 pot is the horror film The Conjuring 2. From the true life story of demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, the film follows their involvement helping a child who has been possessed in Enfield, England. This film was crafted really well, with great acting, on amazing screenplay, and superb directing. I give this and A+ and is now available to rent or buy.

Coming in at number 4 is the live action remake of  The Jungle Book. This film had amazing direction, performances, special effects, and improved on the original. I give this film an A+ and is now available to rent and buy.

At number 3 is the best superhero film since 2008’s The Dark Knight, Captain America: Civil War. As a Marvel Comics fan, every moment of this film was miraculous. With amazing action and a great screenplay, this summer started off in a great way, before it fell flat with worse movies. I give this film an A+ and is now available to rent and buy.

After that, at number 2, is Zootopia, the new Disney animated masterpiece. This film had amazing animation and is a great allegory for modern times and the social groups that clash in our everyday life. I give this film an A+ and is now available to rent and buy.

Finally, at number 1, is a small film called Sing Street. From the director of “Once, it follows a group of Irish boys who starts a band to impress a girl in 1985 Dublin. With great original songs, acting, direction, and screenwriting, this film has no flaw is definitely one you should check out. I give this film an A+ and is now available to rent and buy.

So, I hope you check out at least one of these amazing movies and I look forward to talking movies again soon!
