In August of 2025, just days before school started again, an email was sent out to all student drivers and parents. In the notice, it was stated that both entrances to the parking lot would be closed down. This was due to the decisions of the private owners of the building on the corner of campus. Their property line overlapped with the lot entrances, causing students and faculty to find a new way to park.
Anticipating long walks and earlier arrivals, plans were made to park on side streets or even blocks away. However, in just a couple of days, HMHS and its staff paved a two-sided driveway leading up to the parking lot. While this is helpful, the rocky road is still causing issues for students.
One senior at HMHS says, “I pay for parking on Sylvan so I don’t have to deal with parking in the main lot.”
Another adds, “I think it’s extremely complicated and difficult to navigate. It’s causing a lot of extra stress to the student body when arriving at school.”
Furthermore, there are still more issues at hand. Some students have been left with no other choice but to park on the grass, as well as make up their own spots. This is due to the limited space the parking lot provides.
To make matters worse, the driveway to the parking lot is only temporary. In March, there will be renovations on the school’s turf, causing the only access students have to the lot to be shut down. As of right now, there is no definite plan for the future, and parking will remain a stressful inconvenience for all of HMHS.
