This year marked the exciting debut of the HMHS DECA Chapter, and what a success it was. Students not only obtained valuable knowledge in how the business world works, but also gained unforgettable memories. The group that started as a few curious kids interested in pursuing business grew into a strong group of future business leaders. With ambition and determination, our school’s DECA members worked tirelessly to make the inaugural season a true success.
DECA is a student organization that prepares high school and college students for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, management, and entrepreneurship. It focuses on leadership development, real-world skills, and competitive events that simulate business scenarios. DECA is a great club for students interested in business. However, it can be a great experience for anyone.
When the DECA chapter in HMHS launched this fall, many students decided to join without fully knowing what to expect. To many people, it seemed like just another extracurricular to put on their college resume. However, the club became much more than that. Aside from the business and career-focused benefits, DECA has helped students form unexpected friendships, improve their social confidence, and strengthen their collaboration skills. Most importantly, DECA has become a super fun experience for all its HMHS members.
Many of HMHS’ members had the opportunity to attend DECA’s Career Development Conferences on the district, state, or international level. Students either competed in business roleplays or presented campaigns in front of real business professionals, gaining firsthand experience in real-world scenarios. Beyond the learning opportunities, students who attended these conferences connected with new friends and truly enjoyed every moment.
Romy Palmateer, HMHS DECA’s chapter president, announced that “Joining DECA has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. It’s not just about learning business skills, it’s about growing as a leader, meeting amazing people, and challenging yourself in ways you never thought possible.”
Overall, introducing DECA to our school was a great choice. If you are slightly interested, I strongly suggest that you join this club. DECA will teach essential life skills from a young age that will support you no matter what career path you choose. From public speaking and problem-solving to teamwork and time management, DECA gives students practical tools that extend far beyond the classroom. By participating in DECA, you’re not just preparing for competition, you’re preparing for your future.
