At Haddonfield Memorial High School, every year the faculty and peer leaders put on an activity named Wellness Day in May before finals. It gives the students and teachers a moment to breathe and have fun for the day. There’s a bouncy house and lots of crafts. Clubs will have tables filled with activities and later in the day, Mr. Softee comes by, and the students love it. Out of the three years I have been going here, I have not heard a single bad thing about Wellness Day. However, I have started to think, what if we had another Wellness Day earlier in the year, perhaps after midterms?
I went around and asked many students and faculty how they would feel if there was another Wellness Day added after midterms. Many teachers and students responded the same: Yes. They all are in agreement that it would give everyone a break. It could give teachers some time to grade and it would give students a day to decompress while still being at school. However, those are all basic answers that I was expecting to receive so I went to the one teacher I knew would give me a logical and well-thought-out response: Ms.Welsh.
When speaking with Ms.Welsh she said that she feels Wellness Day could be moved to February rather than May. She feels as though there are so many activities in the spring that interrupt the curriculum and make the spring feel rushed. So moving Wellness Day to February would be much better than May. When she said this I realized I completely agreed. We have many activities in the spring including Earth Day and Arts in the Courtyard so having one more activity in the spring, it can get too much.
