One majorly overlooked issue at this school is the parking lot or lack thereof. The amount of issues with the current parking situation is aggravating and fairly unsafe.
First of all, the potholes created in the gravel are unsafe for the students as well as their vehicles. Another issue is the fact that it is just a gravel field with no organization. The lack of lined spots is inefficient due to students parking wherever they want, leaving large spaces in between cars, or blocking others in. To add on, the lack of lined spots also increases the risk of collisions between students and parked cars. Furthermore, the general layout of the lot is impractical and dangerous. There may be signs at the entrances and exits that specify entrance and exits; however, in the morning, students enter through every way, and at the end of the day, they leave through each driveway. If you happen to forget something at home and need to leave in the morning, or a parent needs to park in the lot to pick up their child at the end of the day, it is impossible to get out in the mornings and into the lot at the end of the day. This leads to students coming at each other face to face, basically asking for a head-on collision to occur eventually. Moreover, when it rains in the gravel lot it is not just muddy and annoying to walk through, the traction that students vehicles get is hazardous. Gravel dry does not provide much traction, when it is wet it is even worse. Lastly, an environmental issue is the trash in our lot. There are a couple of small grey trashcans in our lot already but I have not seen much difference in the amount of littering in our lot.
The obvious way to resolve all of these major issues is to begin by cleaning up the area, removing the tree that is on the verge of falling on a student car from the lot, and cleaning all the vines off the fence to improve visibility and overall give a nicer look for the school. After the lot is cleaned we would need to pave the lot. Lastly, we need to add lines for each of the spots as well as multiple big, bright, and visible trashcans that will help decrease the amount of littering in our lot. Evidently, the biggest issue with this solution is the price of all of this work. It does seem like an expensive job considering all of the labor and materials. Seeing as the average driveway in the US costs about $5,000 to pave, a whole lot will not be cheap. Money may be a concern, but you cannot put a price on students’ safety. Evidently we spent about $800,000 repairing and re-tiling the bathrooms. I think this is outrageous, considering at the end of last year the bathrooms seemed to be functioning fine, and they decided to make the color of the tile blue. They couldn’t even involve our school colors. If we saved that money from the bathrooms and collected percentages of what it takes to pave the lot over a couple of years, it would be more than possible to resolve this issue.
