LEO Club Hosts Senior Citizens’ Prom

On Sunday, February 9 from 1-3 pm, HMHS’ LEO Club held its annual Senior Citizens’ Prom in Tatem Elementary’s all-purpose room in celebration of Valentine’s Day. LEO Club members arrived as early as 12 pm to set up and decorate the gym. The prom began with lunch and a photo booth; students served food to the senior citizens and sat down with them to hear their stories, such as how long they had been married and how they met. One couple stated that they had been together since college and had just recently celebrated their 65th anniversary! After lunch, everyone headed over to the dance floor, where songs like “The Electric Slide,” “Cha Cha Slide” and “The Cupid Shuffle” played. Then, an experienced dancer named Mavis taught the students some dance moves, but they could not keep up with her. The dancing continued throughout the afternoon, and the students were wowed by the dancing skills of the seniors! Then, the LEO Club Officers asked trivia questions about the 1960s and ’70s. Most of the questions were met with numerous hands because these couples could not be stumped! Next, everyone got up and danced to classics such as “The Chicken Dance” and “The Hokey Pokey”. Finally, as the event came to a close, Ms. Gammie, who serves as LEO club’s advisor, announced the Prom King and Queen: Sam and Fran Haug. They not only got engaged on Valentine’s Day, but also married on Valentine’s Day the following year, and have been together ever since. This event was truly a success and a blast for all in attendance.
