On May 23, students gathered in the HMHS auditorium to celebrate the veterans who served in WW1 and the former students who were drafted into the war. The memorial ceremony opened with the Student Council President, Vivian Hoff, citing the history of the school, paying tribute to the four residents who gave their lives in World War I. It was their lives that paved the foundation for HMHS to be built. As the ceremony commenced, students were asked to rise for the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the National Anthem played by the HMHS Band & Orchestra. After recognizing their service and how grateful our community is for them, five flags were fixed upon empty desks in the front row of the auditorium, representing the Army, the Marine Corps, the Navy, the Air Force, and the Coast Guard.
Luke Patterson, the student council vice president-elect, gave a speech commemorating another alumnus of HMHS, John Hall, who volunteered to be reassigned to the frontlines in Europe. Patterson continued to inform HMHS students of his service and story, stating how he fought German forces who launched a surprise attack on his battalion. He then shared how it is from these veterans that we can see “examples of selfless service, knowing that people just like us have the courage to do truly extraordinary things.” To close the ceremony, a cover of “Travelin’ Soldier” was sung by Elena Domenico, Maddie Kehner, Ryka Khanna, Eleanor McMackin, Ella O’Neil, and Aidan Hammal, who played guitar. Then, two portraits drawn by Sofia Conrey and Mo Nobel of alumni who served were added to the current display in the “A Building.” Alex Osawa then revealed a mural of the six branches of the armed forces. Ella Foley, the historian for the 2025-2026 school year, then continued to honor the fallen. VoiceMale, a group of HMHS students, also performed a cover of “Tell My Father”. Finally, Patterson then gave a concluding statement about the importance of Memorial Day to our school and community.
