Nichloas Hansen, who graduated from HMHS in 2015, has made a large impact on the students in our community with his tutoring business, Level Up Math. Hansen graduated from the University of Delaware in 2020, and because of the pandemic, there were limited teaching opportunities. Because he was unable to get a classroom job for the upcoming school year, he landed on tutoring. He saw a need for math tutors during a time where kids were falling behind due to a lack of in person learning.
“I saw that there was such high demand and need in Haddonfield that I was able to make it a full time career.”
Math was always Hansen’s strongest subject, but he knew he wanted to teach, noting, “I was always good at math in school and when I got accepted into college as a math major, I realized pretty quickly that the only thing I would actually want to do in math is teach, so I switched to Elementary education and certified in Special Ed Education.”
Throughout his time as an Elementary Education Major, he took classes on Math Education. This is when the light bulb turned on.
“I took two classes on math education and that is what made me interested in math because they taught all the strategies that I should have been taught in school and in that moment, things that even I once struggled with, made more sense, so I wanted to share those strategies to students who are also struggling in those same areas because I know how it feels.” Hansen now tutors everything from elementary arithmetic to pre-calculus. Nicholas describes his way of teaching as, “Personalized sessions depending on the student’s needs.” His students have increased their grades dramatically since their start with Level Up Math.
Nicholas Hansen’s light bulb moment has allowed him to improve the lives of our community members. He has impacted the academic lives of many students throughout his time working with them. He hits on their weaknesses and congratulates them on their strengths. He has maintained a full schedule for the last two years. Level Up Math has been a success due to Nicholas Hansen’s patience, as well as his passion to improve the lives of our students and their confidence in the classroom.
